March saw more of the largest wind turbine project enter the Port of Galway.
In total, 58 wind turbines and ancillary components for the project will be handled at the cities quays. This is welcome project cargo and highlights the important role that Ports play in the success of the economy.
Harbour Master Captain Brian Sheridan said that “the lowering of the road at Lough Atalia was the last piece of infrastructure necessary to get this project over the line”. The blades are striking close to whale bones and at 55 metres long are some of the longest in the renewable energy industry.
The Wind Turbines are destined for the Galway Wind Park where they have the potential to generate enough energy for 80% of the homes in Galway. It will be Ireland’s largest wind park. The project is being managed by Capt. Bob Ellis who has overseen 6 other smaller wind turbine projects.
The Wind Turbines are manufactured by Siemens, Denmark. The importation of components is expected to continue until June 2017, which will be commissioned in September 2017.
