The Port of Galway was offered the opportunity to handle the Arderroo Wind Farm project following our successful completion of the Maghermore Project in Knock in 2019.

The turbine blades of the Maghermore project were 58m long, and the proposed blades for Arderroo were 73m.

Considerable work was undertaken in the Port for us to handle these longer blades which involved creating new access from the Quay to storage and on to the national road network.

This involved moving a section of the Bitumen discharge line underground, as well as creating an exit road through the car park.

Following this work, completed at the beginning of 2022, the Port can handle blades of up to 86m.

The Arderroo project, adjacent to Galway Wind Park, commenced in July 2022 and continued until February 2023. It consisted of 14 ships with 22 Nordex N149 turbines with a total output of 115 MW.

This was followed on by the Moanvane (57.6 MW), Yellow River (101MW) and Derrinlough (128 MW) Projects.

As of August 2024, a total of 791MW of wind turbines have been delivered through Galway Port in a total of 20 projects.

Going forward, there is a healthy pipeline of Wind Energy projects in Galway’s catchment area which includes Co Offaly and the M6 corridor, Mayo and Clare.

The Port of Galway is very keen to help to achieve Irelands low emissions targets and to continue to be a major gateway port in this green energy sector.
